Using the workaround I was able to open old *.kwl-files from a backup (opensuse 13.1), export them as XML and import them in my newly created, empty kwallets. Meanwhile, do not hesitate to upgrade to KDE/4.14 if you can, as the screenshot showing the opened wallet was obtained with that version, on my system. So something in the way the wallets are unlocked must have changed with kwalletmanager from 4.14.3 to 4.14.4. I've been using kde 4 for a few months now, so this problem doesn't happen that frequently.

After upgrading kdebase-runtime back to 14.12.1-1, I killed kwalletd and had success with some of my 3 wallets but still got error -9 for one. 5. Restarting kwalletmanager and this works too.
